The latest Urban Traffic Management with adaptive SCOOT control

General Details

UTC-UX With Adaptive SCOOT Control

The successful management of traffic in the 21st century places many demands upon the service provider.

As the volume of traffic using the highways continues to grow at a greater rate than the capacity of the road network, the effect of traffic congestion is an ever-increasing problem around the world. Siemens Mobility’s UTC has proven itself in over 100 towns and cities across the globe as effective in reducing congestion and maximising the efficiency of the road network. UTC-UX is the latest release of the Siemens Mobility UTC software and builds on over 30 years of domain knowledge and experience gained from over 100 deployments worldwide to bring a brand-new user experience to the market.

Siemens Urban Traffic Control (UTC) System

The latest generation of the HTML5 browser based user interface of UTC-UX with easy to understand visualisations brings traffic control to life. Find what you are looking for quickly, UTC-UX brings the information you need straight to you with clever widgets that present relevant information to you.

Click through links enable you to browse from the on-street hardware (OTU) to the junction and on to the SCOOT node and region views. Integrated maps, modern graphics, searchable lists, simple controls and interactive graphs bring your data to life.

Summer 2019 sees the introduction of the second release of UTC-UX with brand new automatically generated visualisations including SCOOT node diagrams (left) making it easy to see the relationships between nodes and understand how the SCOOT model is currently operating. UTC-UX helping you focus on what’s important.

Siemens UTC Hosted System Benefits

Siemens Mobility was the first to introduce cloud-based real-time adaptive traffic control to the market with hosted UTC running on the Microsoft Server operating system. The current version, UTC-UX, builds on this with direct secure by design internet access with two-factor authentication for system access and peace of mind.
Benefits
  • Hosted systems bring many benefits compared to locally-deployed systems, including enhanced security, automated backups and proven fast-restore procedures in the event that the underlying hardware fails. All managed by Siemens Mobility
  • Still not convinced that hosted is the solution for you? Then a locally deployed UTC-UX server based system running Microsoft Server 2016 could be the answer
  • UTC-UX works with modern internet browsers and removes the need for specialised client software; one less thing for your IT department to worry about

SCOOT Adaptive Control

UTC-UX can operate groups of junctions in either coordinated fixed-time control, real-time adaptive control or a combination of the two and uses the latest version of SCOOT MMX.

The adaptive algorithm of SCOOT reacts in real time at the junction level within the current cycle by changing the split. At the end of each cycle the offset between junctions is adjusted and periodically the cycle time across the coordinated set of junctions is varied. Keeping traffic flowing optimally.

The result? SCOOT has been proven to provide measurable improvements in terms of reliable journey times and greater than 20% reduction in vehicle stops and delays compared to an uncoordinated network and over 5% compared to a coordinated fixed-time network.

SCOOT can also give priority to public transport vehicles, improving bus journey times and helping with the drive towards modal shift by providing a consistent journey time for buses. SCOOT can also recover from external events including the passage of trams and/or emergency vehicles.

Enhanced features that enable the network operator to balance pedestrian demand vs traffic demand are available, keeping everyone safe.

The impact of poor air quality on our streets to our health is becoming increasingly important to all of us. SCOOT helps us to understand the impact of traffic and delays with emission estimates taking into account the changing mix of vehicles on our road network.

In addition to improving the traffic flow, SCOOT is a rich source of data that can be used by strategic traffic control systems such as Stratos to further improve the overall network management when combined with other big data variables.

SCOOT MMX is the final version jointly developed by Siemens Mobility, Dynniq and TRL with steering input from Transport for London. Siemens Mobility has now embarked in partnership with TfL to develop the next generation of the SCOOT algorithm to meet the demands of an increasingly connected world.
